PURPOSE:
The reason for your visit to local elementary schools is really two fold.
First, to explain your role as an "All Saint" on Halloween. Second, to
instill in the minds of the students whom you are trying to help make this
Halloween safe for everyone as well as to impress upon the younger
children that they should not commit senseless vandalism.
OUR ROLE:
Members of the "All Saints" work with the community and the police each Halloween. Rather than committing vandalism and going door-to-door, our members volunteer the evening to assist both the very young and the elderly to ensure that everyone has a safe and fun Halloween. We assist by escorting children, watching properties and assisting people wherever possible.
This Halloween, the students in the All Saints program will be in private homes and on the streets throughout our community. So, when a student sees a member with their unique and distinctive shirt, they should immediately think of the "All Saint" as a friend whom they can safely go to for help or assistance. All of our student teams know how to contact the local police in case of an emergency.
So, if a child is threatened or attacked, they should let one of the "All Saints" know what happened and they, in turn, will assist the student and/or call the police. If a student should get hurt or lost, they also should call ask the "All Saints" for assistance. You should stress the fact that we are working with, and are in constant contact with police.
As well, students should let the "All Saints" know if they know of someone who may have or who may be senselessly vandalizing property. Vandalism is a crime that costs all of us millions of dollars each year through added insurance costs and wasted dollars. Money spent by a school to paint walls or replace broken windows could have been used for movies, VCRs, computers, gym equipment, classroom games, etc. Further, you should stress that parents are accountable for the actions of their children. So, if a young person commits an act of vandalism, the courts may hold the parents responsible and order the parents to pay to pay the costs for the damage caused.
Even smashing a pumpkin is considered a crime and vandalism. Smashing or throwing a pumpkin on a street is mischief; or throwing eggs is considered as littering and could result in a $385.00 fine and criminal record. So, be careful when you think that such activities are harmless pranks. The police and the courts do not see it as that way. They see such acts as crimes and against the law. End your session by stressing that the "All Saints" are out on Halloween to watch and to help. We are non-confrontational.
